THE VISION

The Grand Narrative is an epic trilogy that tells the biblical story like a novel, accompanied by lifelike images for each major plot point.

As N.T. Wright explained, “The biblical narrative is a grand, sprawling story that catches us up in its sweep, astonishing us with the God who enters history to redeem it, inviting us to join the plot.” The goal of The Grand Narrative is to display the beautiful reality of that story that we might marvel at the God who authored it and step into the narrative ourselves.

The narrative is broken into three books:

  • Out of the Garden covers the core narrative content from the first five books of the Bible (the pentateuch). It opens with the creation of the universe and tracks God’s redemptive plan for humanity through the fall, the calling of God’s chosen people, their deliverance from Egypt, their encounter with the living God at Mount Sinai, and their wandering through the wilderness toward a promised land of abundance. Available: Now

  • Conquerors to Captives covers the rest of the Old Testament. It starts with the conquest of Canaan through the period of judges, the kingdom of Israel, and the division and exile of God’s people, weaving in prophecies of a coming king who would reign forever. It includes some of the most colorful of the Bible’s characters, including Samson, David, Daniel, Jonah, Elijah, and Esther. Available: Mid-2026

  • Crown of Thorns begins with the birth of King Jesus in Bethlehem and traces his ministry through his crucifixion and resurrection.  It continues through Pentecost and the explosion of the early church and ends with the prophesied second coming of Christ. Available: Mid-2026

We started this journey with a simple goal: to introduce our own children to Scripture by providing a “bridge” to reading the Bible for themselves. But as the words and images flowed, our own hearts were moved with awe and wonder. As longtime Christians raised in Christian households, we realized that we, too, needed a book like this—to pierce through the familiarity and reawaken us to the power of the greatest story ever told.

Whether you are a seeker looking to gain a deeper understanding of the biblical narrative, a young adult digging into Scripture for the first time, or a longtime Christian craving a fresh sense of childlike wonder, this book is intended for you.

THE TEXT

The Grand Narrative is designed to present the story of the Bible in a format that uniquely showcases its narrative quality. To do that, we’ve crafted a retelling of Scripture that is as novel-like as possible, without compromising biblical accuracy or theological depth. We’ve added short reflections after each chapter to highlight an aspect of each story’s role in the broader narrative.

This book should not, of course, be confused with the Word of God itself. There is no substitute for the divinely inspired Scripture, faithfully transcribed, preserved, translated, and shared from generation to generation. We would not presume to replace authoritative translations of the Bible. Our goal is much more modest: to provide a useful, imaginative, and clear supplement to immerse readers in the major stories and themes of Scripture in a manner that allows them to track the narrative thread from beginning to end. By providing context, plot exposition, structure, and imagery, we aim to draw readers toward scripture with a renewed sense of wonder, curiosity, and worship.

With this goal in mind, we have made consistency with the source text our top priority, resisting the temptation to “fill in the gaps” with speculation. We have also woven direct quotes from Scripture throughout. Every word that appears within quotation marks is a direct quote from the ESV translation.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS

We have used our imaginations (and AI tools) to layer in lifelike, cinematic images to help readers visualize these stories in a fresh and clear way, as if you were there as a first-hand observer. Although new tools enable image generation at the click of a button, quality images require an initial vision plus hours of iteration and alteration to align the image with that vision. These tools allow us to illustrate The Grand Narrative in a way that has never been possible before. Though the characters of the story lived in ancient history, they were no less historical, and they experienced the same set of human emotions that we do today. We hope the lifelike images helps readers appreciate the historic reality of the biblical stories.
